UK flooring distributors, homeware wholesalers, contract fit-out buyers and retailers do not all need the same kind of Turkish carpet. A woven area rug, a tufted broadloom roll and a floor covering intended for permanent installation differ in construction, performance expectations, packaging and compliance review. Before collecting quotations, turn the intended sales channel and use case into a precise product specification.
Choose the carpet category before comparing factories
Separate machine-woven rugs, hand-woven flatweaves, tufted wall-to-wall carpet, carpet tiles and washable decorative rugs into distinct enquiry lines. Give the target dimensions, permitted size tolerances, construction, fibre blend, pile height, pile weight or density where relevant, backing material, edge finish, pattern repeat and colour references. Two carpets that look similar in a photograph can feel, wear and price very differently.
Ask for a specification sheet for the exact proposed design, not a generic factory catalogue. Request a physical sample showing colour, backing, edge stitching and hand feel. If the product is destined for contract premises rather than a home, describe traffic intensity, cleaning regime, expected service life and installation method before accepting a domestic-range quotation.
Review product performance for the intended UK use
For floor coverings incorporated into building works, discuss the intended installation and ask the importer, specifier and supplier to establish whether construction-products rules, relevant performance declarations and marking requirements apply to the particular product. UK government guidance distinguishes the applicable construction-product pathways and continues to evolve; do not assume that every decorative loose rug is regulated like a permanently installed contract floor covering.
Request evidence matched to the exact SKU and installation, such as reaction-to-fire test information when specified, slip or wear performance where relevant, fibre composition, colourfastness, cleaning instructions and the production batch identification. A certificate for a different backing, pile, adhesive or test configuration must not be advertised as proof for this order. Let the project designer or competent compliance adviser set acceptance criteria before shipment.
Make a sample and private-label approval pack
For retailer collections, agree a signed-off sample or master swatch, product photography standard, barcode responsibility, labelling languages, care information, packaging artwork, carton dimensions and colour approval tolerance. Ask whether multiple sizes share the same yarn, backing and finish, and whether production lots can be mixed without a visible shade difference. Record the sample batch and reference it in the purchase order.
For broadloom rolls, confirm roll width, usable length, winding direction, core, roll protection and loading method. For area rugs, compare folded versus rolled packing, protective sleeves, pallet patterns and the volume occupied by each size mix. A lower factory unit price can be outweighed by damage claims, oversized packaging or unsaleable size ratios after arrival in the UK.
Classify the shipment and check UK import treatment
The UK importer generally needs the appropriate EORI registration and a customs declaration process. HMRC guidance directs importers to identify the correct commodity code before calculating duty and VAT; product construction, materials and how the goods are made can affect classification. Do not assume that a hand-woven rug, tufted roll and textile floor covering use one code or share the same tariff outcome.
The importer or customs agent should check the current UK Trade Tariff for the exact goods and review any available preference under the UK–TURKIYE trade arrangement. Preferential treatment is conditional, including the relevant rules and proof of origin; dispatching goods from TURKIYE alone is not proof of eligibility. Northern Ireland movements may involve a different process from deliveries to Great Britain, so state the destination clearly.
Compare landed cost and agree commercial controls
Ask each candidate supplier to quote minimum order quantities by design, colour and size, yarn and backing specification, sample cost, production lead time, overproduction tolerance, carton or roll dimensions, gross weight, inspection terms and a named Incoterm. Request price breaks using the same size mix and destination so competing offers can be compared fairly. Identify who books freight, insures the goods, prepares documents and handles damaged cartons.
Before committing to a large order, inspect the trial batch against the reference sample, measure representative sizes, check pile and backing consistency, review labels and record packing photos. A useful first enquiry says whether the buyer sells to retail stores, online customers or contract projects; lists target sizes, fibres, order volume, destination and required performance documents; and asks for an itemised quotation rather than a headline price per square metre.
